Superior Performance

This claim might seem a bit strange given that the numbers of the GLE trump the Q7. However, critics back us up. The secret lies in the supercharger, the transmission, and the suspension. Superchargers are directly powered by the crankshaft; turbochargers are powered by exhaust pressure. This means that at the low-end of RPM—like when you’re idling at a streetlight—power with a supercharger is immediate upon acceleration. Turbos have to achieve a certain pressure first. This results in what’s called turbo lag, making low-end acceleration slower and less immediate. The 9-speed in the GLE is perfectly acceptable, however, the 8-speed in the Q7 is exceptional and refined; outside of a dual-clutch transmission, few transmissions feel as responsive at the 8-speed automatic in the Q7. Lastly, the ride quality in the Q7 is as excellent as its handling is agile, even when riding on rough roads. Unfortunately for the GLE, anything other than smooth pavement and you’ll feel every bump along the way.

Higher Standard Seating Capacity

The Q7 comes standard with three-row seating. That comes out to seven-person standard seating capacity. Captain’s chairs are available for the second row, reducing the capacity to six. The GLE 400? It has a three-row option, but that’ll set you back a few thousand dollars over the original price tag. The GLE is a five-seater with standard options.
